Analysis of Software Measures Using Metrology Concepts - ISO 19761 Case Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
To help identify the strengths of proposed software measurement methods, this paper proposes an analytical approach based on metrology concepts documented in the ISO International Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology. This approach is illustrated with a case study using one specific functional size measurement method recognized as an ISO standard: COSMIC-FFP (ISO 19761). The case study documents the metrology concepts addressed in this ISO standard, either in the design of this measurement method or in some of its practical uses. It illustrates, for instance, that the design of COSMIC-FFP encompasses a large number of related metrology concepts. It is suggested that such a review using metrology criteria be used to analyze other software functional size measurement methods, as well as other software measures suggested to industry.

Investigation of the Metrology Concepts in ISO 9126 on Software Product Quality Evaluation
The ISO International Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology (VIM) represents the international consensus on a common and general terminology of metrology concepts. However, until recently, it was not usual practice in software engineering measurement to take into account metrology concepts and criteria in the design of software measures. Using the ISO 9126-4 Technical Report on the...
متن کاملAnalysis of the ISO 9126 on Software Product Quality Evaluation from the Metrology and ISO 15939 Perspectives
While metrology has a long tradition of use in physics and chemistry, it is rarely referred to in the software engineering measurement, and in particular, in the design and documentation of software measures. Using the ISO 9126-4 Technical Report on the measurement of software quality in use as a case study, this paper reports on the extent to which this ISO series addresses the metrology crite...
متن کاملDesign Steps for developing Software Measurement Standard Etalons for ISO 19761 (COSMIC-FFP)
Material measurement standard etalons are widely recognized as critical for accurate measurements in any field. The absence of standard etalons in software measurement is having a negative impact on software engineers when they come to use measurement results in decision-making. To verify measurement results and ensure unambiguous comparability across contexts, researchers in software measureme...
متن کاملMeasurement Model of Software Requirements Derived from System Maintainability Requirements
Maintainability is typically described initially as a non functional requirement at the system level. Systems engineers must subsequently apportion these system requirements very carefully as either software or hardware requirements to conform to the maintainability requirements of the system. A number of concepts are provided in the ECSS, ISO 9126, and IEEE standards to describe the various ty...
متن کاملUsing the ISO 19761 COSMIC Measurement Standard to Reduce “Information Asymmetry” in Software Development Contracts and Enable Greater Competitiveness
In most economic transactions involving software development projects, differences in the amount and quality of information possessed by economic agents (i.e. producers and customers) can lead to significant market inefficiencies. This paper describes the way the information derived from the functional size of software measured using the ISO 19761 COSMIC measurement standard that can help reduc...
